The aim of the school is to present adaptive dynamics (AD), a mathematical framework to model long-term evolution of coevolving multi-species communities, with special emphasis on the generation of diversity through evolutionary branching. Evolutionary branching takes place when a resident and a similar mutant type coexist in the same environment and natural selection favors further differentiation between the two types. The evolutionary dynamics are described as a random walk in the space of the coexisting strategies, a space with variable dimension according to evolutionary branching and extinction. Evolution proceeds in the direction of the local fitness gradient and can be approximated by deterministic continuous dynamics ruled by the AD canonical equation. Applications to relevant biological communities, as well as to social and economic sciences, where innovations and competition play the role of mutations and natural selection, will be presented.

The school is part of the teaching activities organized by the PhD Program in Information Technology at Politecnico di Milano, yet it is not only addressed to PhD students, but to all researchers working in any areas of science and engineering and interested in modelling innovation and competition processes. Advanced theoretical topics and cutting-edge applications of AD will be presented in the workshop by the leading scientists in the field.

SOCIAL ACTIVITY

A group visit to the Cenacolo Vinciano can be arranged. Interested participants must fill the proper item in the registration form.

Tickets will be reserved (according to availability) at the beginning of February 2014 at the price of about 10-15 Euro (depending on the number of participants, including English guide) to be reimbursed (in cash) to the organizers. Your declaration of interest is intended as a commitment to reimburse the ticket price to the organizers even if unable to join the visit. For later registrations (after February 2014) booking in the same group visit cannot be guaranteed.

The participation is free of charge for people working at the Politecnico di Milano: PhD students, post-docs ("assegnisti"), research associates, and professors of any Department.

If you are not working at the Politecnico di Milano the admission fee is:

  • 200 Euro, for members of the Italian Society for Chaos and Complexity (SICC).
  • 250 Euro, for non members (it includes four-year membership to SICC).

If you work at Politecnico di Milano as a PhD student, post-doc ("assegnista"), research associate, or professor of any Department, you must fill in and mail the registration form [click here for the form]. If you are a PhD student you must also include the school in your study plan by the usual Poliself procedure and read the notes on the exam.
  2. If you are not working at the Politecnico di Milano, you must pay the proper admission fee and fill in and mail the registration form [click here for the form].
You will receive a confirmation message within a few days. Registrations requiring an admission fee will be confirmed after the payment is received (sending a copy of the bank transfer receipt is not required). A receipt for the payment will be provided upon request to the SICC secretariat (info@sicc-it.org). In case of renunciation, the reimbursement of the admission fee to the school and workshop (200 Euro) can be requested to the SICC secretariat no later than April 26, 2014.

A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants at the end of the school.

VENUE

The school will be held at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria (DEIB), Politecnico di Milano, via Ponzio 34/5 (building 20), 20133 Milano, in the "Sala Conferenze" (ground floor).

The Department building is located in the Bassini campus of the Politecnico di Milano. It is within walking distance of the stations Piola and Lambrate FS of the Metro (underground) line 2 ("green line"), of the tram lines 23 and 33, of the bus line 93, and of the train station Lambrate FS. For further information on how to reach, you can read these instructions.

The organisers of the school cannot take care of travel and accommodation of the participants. Many hotels are available near the campus [click here for a list]. A limited number of single and double rooms are available in the Student Houses of the Politecnico.
